VR-Touch

Description#

Thanks to head mounted displays people are able to dive into virtual worlds. So far this experience is mostly visual and other senses are only addressed secondary, if they are addressed at all. For example vibrating controllers just add haptic feedback to what is perceived optical. But how would it be if you could not only see but feel the virtual world? The experience could be more eventful and above all become accessible for people with visual impairments.

Exactly this is the goal of our project: blind and visual impaired should be able to play a asymmetric and collaborative VR Computer Game with sighted people, in which they break into a museum as professional thieves and fight their way through all the security precautions. While the sighted player is going to play with a HTC Vive, the focus for the visual impaired lies on feeling virtual 3D Objects with 3 or 6 degrees of freedom. For implementation we use the Unreal Engine and build a plug-in for easy integration of force feedback devices like Phantom Omni and Virtuose 3D Desktop.

Game#

A rich, ruthless collector has various artefacts from all over the world to display them at his Museum of the Precious Arts. But most of the artefacts come from dirty deals.
When an infamous team of professional thieves that has been inactive for the last 10 years learn about the doings of the collector, they want to use the opportunity and steal the objects from the museum before they can be sold and disappear forever.

The team consists of three persons:
The first is Vive, a sportive conman who is very skilled at deception and pickpocketing.
The second is Phantom, a blind technician and art expert who is very skilled at bypassing security systems and stealthing.
And the third is Falcon, an ambitious computer freak and hacker who assists the others from their van and can get the plans for all their targets.

With the guidance of Falcon Vive and Phantom need to pass different security systems like security locks, laser and pressure plates to reach the exhibition room. In there Vive has to distract guards and collect objects which Phantom has to inspect with his special device in order to feel if an object is real or fake and really the object they planned to steal because they cannot take everything.
